چکیده

The discrete element method (DEM) is used to study the thermal effects of pebble failure in an ensemble of lithium ceramic spheres. Some pebbles crushing in a large system is unavoidable and this study provides correlations between the extent of pebble failure and the reduction in effective thermal conductivity of the bed. In the model, we homogeneously induced failure and applied nuclear heating until dynamic and thermal steady-state. Conduction between pebbles and from pebbles to the boundary is the only mode of heat transfer presently modeled. The effective thermal conductivity was found to decrease rapidly as a function of the percent of failed pebbles in the bed. It was found that the dominant contributor to the

Application of discrete element method to study mechanical behaviors of ceramic breeder pebble beds

In this paper, the discrete element method (DEM) approach has been applied to study mechanical behaviors of ceramic breeder ebble beds. Directly simulating the contact state of each individual particle by the physically based interaction laws, the DEM umerical program is capable of predicting the mechanical behaviors of non-standard packing structures. The program can also rovide the data to tr...

Numerical study on influences of bed resettling, breeding zone orientation, and purge gas on temperatures in solid breeders

We apply coupled computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method (CFD-DEM) modeling tools with new numerical implementations of pebble fragmentation to study the combined effects of granular crushing and ensemble restructuring, granular fragment size, and initial packing for different breeder volume configurations. In typical solid breeder modules, heat removal from beds relies on main...

Numerical Characterization of Thermo-mechanical Performance of Breeder Pebble Beds

A numerical approach using the discrete element method (DEM) has been applied to study the thermo-mechanical properties of ceramic breeder pebble beds. This numerical scheme is able to predict the inelastic behavior observed in a loading and unloading operation. In addition, it demonstrates that the average value of contact force increases linearly with overall pressure, but at a much faster ra...

Contact Detection Acceleration in Pebble Flow Simulation for Pebble Bed Reactor Systems

Pebble flow simulation plays an important role in the steady state and transient analysis of thermal-hydraulics and neutronics for Pebble Bed Reactors (PBR). The Discrete Element Method (DEM) and the modified Molecular Dynamics (MD) method are widely used to simulate the pebble motion to obtain the distribution of pebble concentration, velocity, and maximum contact stress. Although DEM and MD p...

Study on Pebble-Fluid Interaction Effect in Pebble Bed Reactors

INTRODUCTION In pebble bed reactors (PBRs), fuel pebbles containing TRISO particles continuously circulate within the core during operation, while the coolant fluid, either helium gas (in Pebble Bed Gas-cooled Reactors) or molten flibe salt (in Pebble Bed-Advanced High Temperature Reactors), continuously passes through the pebbles to transfer the heat generated by fission reactions out of the c...
